Germany Income Tax Calculator 2026 (Einkommensteuer)

Germany doesn't use tax brackets — it runs your income through a mathematical formula with a smooth, curved marginal rate. This calculator implements the official 2026 Grundtarif (§32a EStG) exactly, including the €12,348 Grundfreibetrag and the Solidaritätszuschlag.

How German income tax works

German income tax (Einkommensteuer) is famously formula-driven. Instead of stepped brackets, §32a of the Income Tax Act defines five zones with quadratic equations, so the marginal rate glides smoothly from 14% up to 45% with no cliff edges. The first €12,348 of taxable income is tax-free — the Grundfreibetrag, raised from €12,096 in 2025. This calculator uses the Grundtarif (single assessment); married couples filing jointly use the Splittingtarif, which effectively doubles the zone widths and usually lowers the bill.

Important: the input is your zu versteuerndes Einkommen (zvE) — taxable income after work-related expenses, pension/health insurance contributions and other deductions — not your gross salary. Your zvE is typically several thousand euros below your gross pay, so entering your gross salary directly would overstate the tax.

Methodology — the 2026 Grundtarif formula

Zone 1: zvE ≤ €12,348 → tax = €0
Zone 2: €12,349–€17,799 → tax = (914.51·y + 1,400)·y,  y = (zvE − 12,348)/10,000
Zone 3: €17,800–€69,878 → tax = (173.10·z + 2,397)·z + 1,034.87,  z = (zvE − 17,799)/10,000
Zone 4: €69,879–€277,825 → tax = 0.42·zvE − 11,135.63
Zone 5: ≥ €277,826 → tax = 0.45·zvE − 19,470.38 (Reichensteuer)

Result rounded down to the whole euro, per statute.

Solidaritätszuschlag: 5.5% of the income-tax bill, but only if that bill exceeds €20,350 (single); between the threshold and the full-rate zone an 11.9% phase-in (Milderungszone) applies, so soli = min(5.5% × tax, 11.9% × (tax − 20,350)). Roughly 90% of taxpayers pay no Soli at all.

Worked example

Taxable income €60,000 (single, 2026): this falls in zone 3, so z = (60,000 − 17,799)/10,000 = 4.2201. Tax = (173.10 × 4.2201 + 2,397) × 4.2201 + 1,034.87 = 3,127.50 × 4.2201 + 1,034.87 = €14,233 (rounded down) — an effective rate of about 23.7%. The marginal rate on the next euro is roughly 36%. No Solidaritätszuschlag applies, because €14,233 is below the €20,350 threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still pay the Solidaritätszuschlag in 2026?

Probably not — since the 2021 partial abolition, Soli only kicks in when your income-tax bill exceeds €20,350 (single) or €40,700 (joint), with a gentle 11.9% phase-in zone. Around 90% of taxpayers are exempt. The calculator applies the threshold and phase-in automatically.

What is the difference between Grundtarif and Splittingtarif?

Grundtarif is the single-person tariff used here. Married couples (and registered partners) filing jointly use the Splittingtarif: joint income is halved, the Grundtarif applied, and the result doubled — effectively doubling every zone width, which usually cuts the tax. This calculator covers Grundtarif only.

Is my gross salary the same as zu versteuerndes Einkommen?

No. zvE is what remains after deductions: the €1,230 employee lump sum (Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag), social-security/pension contributions, health insurance, and any other Werbungskosten or Sonderausgaben. It's normally well below gross salary.

Does this include church tax (Kirchensteuer)?

No. Church tax (8–9% of your income-tax bill, depending on the state) applies only to registered members of collecting churches and varies by Bundesland, so it's excluded here.

What about the Steuerklasse on my payslip?

Steuerklassen (I–VI) only affect monthly wage-tax withholding (Lohnsteuer) by your employer, not your final annual liability — the annual return reconciles everything to the Grundtarif/Splittingtarif figure this calculator produces.

Are the 2026 figures confirmed?

Yes — the 2026 tariff (§32a EStG, Veranlagungszeitraum 2026) with Grundfreibetrag €12,348 and the zone coefficients above is published; zone boundaries and the €1,034.87 constant were cross-checked for internal continuity at the zone transitions.
